The most medically significant tick is the Paralysis Tick (Ixodes holocuclus) which, while spread down the Australian East Coast from Queensland to Victoria, seems to be more concentrated around the Northern Beaches and north shore of Sydney as well as the Central Coast.

The paralysis tick is responsible for the death of many domestic animals such as cats and dogs each year but will also attack humans. While the peak time for this tick to be active is during summer, its lifecycle stages means that it is present throughout the whole year.
